"Oh, I think it's going to be tonight!" Lily said, clasping her hands together.
James put his hand on her thigh, squeezing. "He sure has been taking his sweet time, hasn't he?"
Remus and Tonks were already seated in the Barcaloungers with popcorn. It was Tonks who spoke up around a mouthful. "It'll be good on Christmas, though. Teddy won't know what hit him, will he, dear?"
Remus shook his head. "Quite right." He kissed his wife on the cheek she presented.
"Does everyone have their champagne ready?" Dumbledore said from the next train car.
"I've got mine, but this bloody contraption's malfunctioning," Sirius complained. "I thought it was going to be in wide screen."
"Well, that's what the instruction manual said," Dumbledore groused.
"Why would you need an instruction manual for Pete's sake?" Fred asked, pausing in passing out Weasley's Wizard Wheezes party favors to fiddle with the telly.
"Ooh, thanks," Tonks said when someone – Sirius – threw a chocolate frog in her direction.
"Where's mine?" Remus called.
"You make a lazy ghost, Moony," Lily chided. She was close enough on the sofa she shared with James and Sirius to reach her leg over the arm of it and poke him with her toe. Remus grabbed at her socked foot playfully, tickling her.
"Cut it out, wolf," James warned.
"Former wolf, thank you. Bambi," Remus muttered under his breath.
"That's Bambi-in-Law to you," Sirius chimed in, and Lily reached past James to smack him.
"I don't understand why it has to look like a television at all," Cedric said, coming into the train car with a plate full of healthy foods. It seemed no one had alerted him to the fact that he no longer had to work to keep fit.
"It's simply good fun," Dumbledore explained, taking a bean bag chair on the floor and nearly spilling his champagne.
"Got it!" Fred yelled. "If I'm correct, we'll not only get tonight's big event in wide screen but we should be able to get the BBC in high def now, too."
"Oh bloody hell, not the Christmas channel again," Snape complained as he filtered through the wall.
Tonks corrected him. "It's not the Christmas channel. It's the proposal."
"It's about to start," Lily warned him. "You don't want to miss it, do you?"
Snape was still frowning, but he came around to stand behind her none-the-less. She took his hands and rested them on her shoulders. If anyone had cared to notice, they'd have seen he was blushing.
"Quiet!" called Sirius suddenly. "Harry's on!"
"Oh, shh, shh!" Remus added, sitting up straighter.
A hush fell over the train car.
The Harry on the telly cleared his throat and took Teddy's hand, leading him over by the hearth. "You look lovely," he said.
"Awwww!" Lily sighed and then sniffed.
"He does look lovely," Tonks whispered to her husband proudly.
"Yes, I like the purple quite a lot," he whispered back.
"Shh!" Snape hissed.
"You look…lovely, too," Teddy told Harry.
Lily squeezed her husband's hand, and James took Sirius', too, and held it in his lap. "I can't take the suspense," Sirius growled. "Bloody ask him!"
"SHHH!" went the room.
"I have something I want to ask you," Harry said, then. When he went down on one knee, Lily squealed a bit and Snape unknowingly began to knead her shoulders.
Teddy's hands went over his mouth in shock.
"Will you marry me, Teddy Lupin?" Harry asked, looking up at him and holding out a little black box.
"Used his full name. That's so classy, that," Remus beamed. Tonks wiped the tears from her eyes.
"Bloody hell YES!" Teddy shouted.
"Atta boy!" Fred yelled, lifting his glass.
"Really?" Harry was asking, but hardly anyone watching the telly could hear it. A ruckus surely heard on several astral planes and beyond went up in the room.
"Oh I'm so happy!" Tonks cried.
"He did it! He did it!" Cedric laughed. Without thinking he went to hug Snape but got a warning glare that stopped him short.
Harry rose to his feet, beaming. He and Teddy both laughed at the same time, and then Harry pulled Teddy close, kissing him hard. They wrapped their arms around each other.
"Congratulations, Harry and Teddy!" Dumbledore called delightedly.
"Here, here!" everyone chorused, lifting their glasses and then drinking their champagne.
"Three cheers for Harry and Teddy!" Remus shouted, though his voice caught at the end.
"More champagne for all!" Sirius called, snapping his fingers and filling everyone's glasses once more.
"Happy Christmas, everyone," Snape said quietly, in a voice too dignified for tears.
"Happy Christmas," the room echoed.
"And to everyone – to all our loved ones not yet here, Merlin bless them," Dumbledore added, "To all of them a very good night." He snapped the telly off to give the newly engaged some privacy. Then he looked around the room mischievously. "Let's party then, shall we?"
