I have such mixed feelings about this. I've decided I'm just grateful! I know fanfic awards can create problems; I don't want to ignore that. But dammit, I'm grateful. I'm grateful. <3 I feel completely honored to have been nominated twice four OMGFIVE times: best H/D drabble, best H/D smut, best slash smut, best drama/angst, and best threesome smut. Wow! \o/ So thank you to whoever nominated me! You warm my heart. (I'm not asking anyone to vote for me, although if you want to, be my guest, LOL! *headdesk*)

You summed up my feelings pretty much exactly. I thought about withdrawing, but decided not to just because whoever nominated me... nominated me.

But, yeah. Hard not wanting to "win" against other fic, but still not wanting to be a loser. Argh!

Competition sucks. I'm gonna curl up under my rock now.

I've decided that I'm not going to vote in either category I'm nominated in. Best het smut is the only easy one for me, because they're both [livejournal.com profile] tamlane's stories, ha! But then...which one...?

Now I'm back to blarg!

;-p

Congrats on your nominations! I do feel very honored about that. I just want everybody to win, though, and I want the people who didn't get nominated to GET nominated, so I guess what I want is for there to be just a big fandom party saying yay for everyone!

Yeah.
I did my nominating (though not in my category) because more fic deserve recognition.

Yay for fic! Yay for writing! Yay for everyone doing it!

It's not a competition though. Like. I don't get it. How is it a competition??

Because once nominations are closed, voting starts and you're competing against the other fic in your pairing & category for a winner?

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! *throws confetti* ♥

I'm planning to get my nomination forms finished this weekend! \o/ Been holding off to the last minute because of possible nominations from Samhain Smut.

Oh, I didn't think about the fact that we could nominate from a current and anon fest! Crap!

But thank you!!! :-D

Congrats to you, too!

Thanks!!! ♥ I don't feel guilty at all. I glory in it. I'm that arrogant. ;D

Although I must say, competition is looking really stiff in my categories. *snort*

The way I am trying to look at it is that some kind person was bothered enough to take the time to nominate me. That makes me really happy. ♥

I know what you mean about the mixed feelings on the rest of it, LOL!

Yep, that's the way I'm thinking on it as well. Accentuate the positive. And congrats on your noms!!!

I'm going back and forth on the withdrawing thing to be perfectly honest.

I don't understand how awards have been turned into a competition though. Someones going to have to explain that one to me. Maybe I just have a different outlook on awards.

I don't like the picture fandom is trying to paint over this whole thing. Should I be a part of that? Idk.

Well, when people vote, they're voting for one story or author over another, so in that way, it's a competition. Perhaps that's me painting it as something it's not. I'm more than happy to see it a different way; that's just how it seems to me. That said, there are a lot of positive things about it, too, so I don't want it to sound like I just think it's a big ball of crap or something. Somebody loved two stories of mine enough to nominate them for something, and I'm truly grateful for that. I guess, in the end, I'm rooting for a big ol' tie all around. ;-)

Oh, the competition thing isn't what I'm talking about when I say it's being painted incorrectly. I just mean the fact the 90% of us have mixed feels abut it because everyone is shaming the whole thing. Like. I feel like everyone feels bad about being nominated.

It's not what they intended, I'm sure. It kind of makes me sad, too.

That said, congrats! Burning the Ground is such a freaking hot fic.

I have a solution. All of you guilty H/D writers come on over to Cross Gen Next Gen, where you don't have to worry about hurting anyone's feelings because NOBODY ELSE WRITES IT.

And you can all start by writing Charlie/Teddy or Charlie/Scorpius kthnx.

Ah, okie doke! I feel great about being nominated, LOL!!!!! I'm just not sure how or if I'm going to vote. Which doesn't mean I want to shame people who definitely will or definitely won't -- just that I haven't yet made up my own mind.

Thank you for the sweet encouragement on my story! <3 I saw you were nominated several times, too, yes? CONGRATS! I know one of them was dark!fic, which I don't read, but I have no doubt yours was stellar. Since you wrote it. :-)

I didn't know we could nominate things from fests, but if I had I would have thrown in 'Buenos Aires'! Heck, I still may if I can figure it all out again. (I'm pretty confused by the categories, honestly.)

Well, it is a difficult subject.

When you hear the word "award" (in any context) it makes you think about the best being nominated and from them, the most voted (popular) will win.

But fandom isn't quite like that, because so many of us don't nominate and/or vote, for whatever reasons, and then maybe a story that was nominated in a category isn't at all like one we would had nominated if we had been inclined to so, and so it is not up to our personal view of what is best in said category. Therefor it is not a quite a representation of fandom as we see it.

This of course doesn't mean that the stories that are nominated aren't good, they are good, and it's enough a single person loves them to be worth it of a nomination, yes?

But on the other hand, it shouldn't be a burden to be nominated. (I'm not telling you how I think you should feel, I'm just trying to make a point, and I'm sorry it's happening at your journal! ^^) Because awards are a celebration, too, a celebration of what a group of people think is the best.

Of course it's not perfect. A great number or stories are not nominated, therefore it doesn't quite take the pulse of fandom.

I see a category with three or four nominations and right at the top of my head I can fill a list with at least ten fics that I feel should be included, and if a lot of people think like that, well, it is easier to not nominate because you know it won't do justice to the rest of the fics which aren't being nominated.

And then there's the unfairness of winning against a fellow writer, or losing against a fellow writer, and neither is good because every story is good by its own right.

I guess I'm not sure what I'm saying. It's nice to think of nominating your favourite fics, the idea of it has merits, and in theory is a lot of fun, but in practice seems too complicated, and very hard to be fair, you know?

I like the idea of celebrating stories. Man, I want to celebrate every story I love, but in reality, it's just hard. Inevitably you're going to leave stories out, because we have so many different tastes that not every single fic could be nominated, and it's thinking about those that makes it hard to work, you know?

That being said, (so, so sorry, I'm ranty today, hopefully not wanky? I'm thrilled for your nomination. Your story was insanely hot. :D
